SATSUMA Miniature Figurine Pair with Dragon or Foo Dog and Baluster Vases with Deities Rare Model Japanese Ceramic Meiji Period

A decorative pair of miniature Satsuma ceramic figurines, finely hand-decorated with rich gilt details and figurative scenes of nine deities and traditional Japanese inspiration. Each baluster-style vase rests on a sculptural base in the shape of a Foo dog or mythological creature.

The figures feature delicate scenes of deities or traditional figures, executed with great precision, surrounded by elaborate gold ornamentation on a dark background. The contrast between the warm tones, the relief details, and the rich gilt ornamentation reflects the classic style of high-quality Satsuma ceramics intended for international export.

Neither figure bears the usual Satsuma hallmark or mark, a common feature of many of these pieces. Nevertheless, their Satsuma origin is unquestionable, and they most likely date from the Meiji period or slightly later, although their exact chronology cannot be determined.

The overall condition is good. However, the Foo dogs show small chips or flaking in some areas, as well as a surface patina consistent with their age. Additionally, one of the figures has a broken leg that was subsequently repaired. This detail is clearly visible in the photographs, which show it from different angles. It should be noted that, due to the small size of the pieces, this imperfection is practically imperceptible to the naked eye and does not detract in any way from the value or appeal of these rare and exceptional works of art.
